Gr23 is the "medical-grade pure version" of Gr5.
Gr23 (Grade 23): This is the American ASTM standard designation, and it is also its most commonly used commercial name.
Ti6Al4V ELI: This is its technical name. Here, ELI is the abbreviation of "Extra Low Interstitial", meaning "extremely low gap elements".
TC4 ELI: The corresponding Chinese standard designation.
The basic composition of Gr23 is exactly the same as that of Gr5 (Ti-6Al-4V), but the core secret lies in the extreme strictness with which the impurity elements are controlled.The strictly controlled "gap elements" mainly refer to:
Oxygen: It has the greatest impact on the strength and brittleness of titanium alloys.The content of O must be less than or equal to 0.13.
By reducing the content of these elements to extremely low levels (much lower than Gr5), Gr23 has acquired the following unparalleled
Advantages:
Exceptional biocompatibility and safety: This is its primary goal. The extremely low impurity content minimizes potential adverse reactions in human tissues, ensuring the long-term safety of the implant in the body for decades.
Higher fracture toughness: While maintaining sufficient strength, the ELI level endows it with superior toughness and crack propagation resistance. This is crucial for implants subjected to cyclic loads (such as hip joints), as it can prevent brittle fractures.
Better low-temperature toughness: "ELI" was originally developed to meet the toughness requirements for low temperatures (such as in liquid hydrogen environments) in the aerospace field.
More balanced comprehensive performance: Compared to Gr5, its strength may be slightly reduced (but still much higher than pure titanium), but in return, it has achieved a significant improvement in toughness and reliability. Its fatigue strength is also very outstanding.
Applications:
It is precisely because of the aforementioned extreme purity, excellent biocompatibility and high toughness that the application scope of Gr23 titanium rods is highly specialized and high-end, almost entirely concentrated in the most demanding fields:
1. The field of medical implants (the absolutely core application, accounting for over 90% of its usage)
This is the undisputed main battlefield for Gr23. It is regarded as the "gold standard" for titanium alloys used in surgical implants.
Orthopedic implants:
Artificial joints: Hip joint stem, femoral head, knee joint components. These parts need to withstand the weight of the human body and cyclic loads for several decades, and have extremely high requirements for fatigue strength and toughness.
Spinal fusion devices and internal fixation systems: Intervertebral fusion devices, pedicle screws, connecting rods. They need to have close contact with the nervous system and have the highest biocompatibility requirements.
Trauma products: Bone plates, intramedullary nails and screws used for fixing complex fractures.
Dental implants: The preferred material for high-end dental implants. It has excellent surface treatment properties and can achieve excellent bone integration with the jawbone.
Cardiovascular Surgery: Cardiac pacemaker casings, artificial heart valve rings, etc.
