Ship structure material: Titanium alloy is widely used in the manufacturing of ship structures due to its high strength, low density, and excellent corrosion resistance. For example, titanium fishing boats built by Nippon Steel Corporation, Toho Technology Corporation and Eto Shipbuilding Corporation, its hulls, decks, and structural all made of titanium. In addition, titanium alloy is also used to manufacture pressure-resistant hulls for submarines and deep-sea submersibles, such as Russia's "Alpha" and "Typhoon" level nuclear submarines.
Power propulsion devices: Titanium alloy propellers have become an ideal material for ship propellers because of their high corrosion fatigue strength and cavitation resistance. Russia and the United Kingdom began to try to use titanium alloy propellers on ships as early as the 1960s, while the US Navy's research submarines and large military hydrofoils also adopted titanium alloy propellers. In addition, titanium alloys are also used in ship engines and water jet propulsion devices, such as Russia's atomic-powered icebreakers used steam engines that containing titanium alloy materials.
Pumps, valves, pipes and other accessories: Titanium alloys are used to manufacture pumps, valves and pipes on ships due to its excellent resistance to corrosion and erosion damage. Use pipes and fittings that made of titanium not only reduces weight, but also significantly extends system life and improves reliability. For example, the corrosion life of titanium alloy pipes, valves, pumps and other accessories is not less than 1.2×105 hours, with a service life not less than 40 years.
Acoustic devices: Titanium alloy is also used to manufacture acoustic devices on ships, such as sonar. Titanium alloy has low density, low sound velocity and good acoustic impedance matching properties, which can improve the detection accuracy and sensitivity of acoustic devices. For example, the sonar dome of Russia's modern-class combat ships is made of titanium alloy.
Heat exchangers, condensers, coolers, evaporators: The application of titanium alloys in these devices can significantly improve their maintenance-free service life. For example, equipment made of titanium can have a maintenance-free service life of over 100,000 hours, and it is environmentally friendly as it does not release harmful substances.
Deep-sea submersibles: Titanium alloys are used to make pressure-resistant housings for deep-sea submersibles because of its high strength and pressure resistance. For example, China's "Jiaolong" manned submersible uses titanium alloy materials to manufacture the pressure-resistant shell.
