Description:

Titanium Ti6242 rod is Ti -6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo,It is a medium-temperature high-strength and heat-resistant titanium alloy, belonging to the α-β type two-phase titanium alloy. This means that its microstructure is composed of the α phase with a low-temperature close-packed hexagonal structure and the β phase with a high-temperature body-centered cubic structure. This structure enables it to be strengthened through heat treatment (solution + aging).

Ti-6242 titanium rods are a high-end and specialized heat-resistant titanium alloy material. It is not a general-purpose material; instead, it is specifically designed to meet the lightweight, high-strength, and heat-resistant requirements of high-temperature rotating components such as those found in aircraft engines.

In simple terms: When the ordinary Gr5 titanium alloy "can't handle" the high temperature, a more powerful Ti-6242 needs to be used. It is one of the indispensable key materials for aerospace power systems.


Characteristic:

  • Excellent heat resistance: This is the most outstanding feature of Ti-6242. It can operate stably for a long time at temperatures ranging from 450°C to 500°C and maintain high strength. Its heat resistance is superior to that of more common Gr5 (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy.
  • Excellent high-temperature creep resistance: In the presence of high temperatures and continuous stress, the material has a strong ability to resist slow plastic deformation (creep), which is crucial for components operating at high temperatures such as engines.
  • High strength and good toughness balance: Through heat treatment, a high specific strength (the ratio of strength to density) can be achieved, while maintaining sufficient fracture toughness.
  • Excellent fatigue performance: Exhibits outstanding performance under cyclic loading and has a relatively good ability to resist fatigue crack propagation.
  • Weldable and machinable: Although it is slightly more difficult than alloys like TC4, it can be welded using methods such as argon arc welding and electron beam welding, and can also be machined. Usually, processing is required after annealing or solution treatment.


Compared with the most commonly used Gr5 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium alloy bars:

Gr5: It has good comprehensive performance and is the most widely used, but its long-term working temperature is generally below 350°C. It is a "universal" type alloy.

Ti-6242 : Specialized for high temperatures. To enhance heat resistance, tin (Sn) and zirconium (Zr) were added. These elements can solvate and strengthen the α phase, thereby improving thermal stability. As a result, its strength and creep resistance at higher temperatures far exceed those of Gr5, but its strength at room temperature may be slightly lower than that of the strongly treated TC4, and it has a higher cost and slightly greater processing difficulty.


Applications:

It is precisely due to its outstanding heat resistance and high-temperature strength that Ti-6242 titanium rods are mainly processed into key components used in high-temperature and high-stress environments. The main application areas include:

1. Aerospace field (core application)

Aerospace engine:

Compressor components: such as compressor discs, blades, drums, rotors, etc. This is its most important application scenario, especially in the middle and rear sections of the engine (with working temperatures ranging from 400 to 500°C).

Fan blades (for some models).

Structural components such as the casing and bearing housing.

Spacecraft components: The shells and connectors of rocket engines, as well as other parts that need to withstand high temperatures.

2. High-performance industrial sector

Gas turbines: Compressor blades and disk components for gas turbines used for power generation or ship propulsion.

High-performance racing vehicles: Lightweight high-performance components such as engine connecting rods and valves for formula racing cars and motorcycles.

3. Other high-end fields

Medical devices: Although not its main market, they can be used for some long-term implants or surgical tools that require special strength or corrosion resistance.

Chemical equipment: Used for specific areas that require high strength, corrosion resistance and certain temperature requirements.
