Titanium Heat Exchangers: How to Select Material and Tube Standards

Titanium heat exchangers outperform stainless steel in corrosive environments, often lasting 20+ years where 316L fails in months. Key advantages: no corrosion allowance needed means thinner walls and better heat transfer, erosion-corrosion resistance enables higher flow velocities, biologically inert surface reduces biofouling. Grade selection: Gr2 handles 80% of applications including seawater, brackish water, and clean process fluids up to 250C. Gr7 with palladium addition for hot chlorides above 80C, reducing acids, and crevice-prone designs. Gr12 with nickel-molybdenum provides 80-90% of Gr7 performance at half the premium. ASTM B338 covers both seamless and welded tube with welded saving 10-20% cost. Typical tube specs: 19.05mm or 25.4mm OD, 0.7-0.9mm wall. Use titanium or titanium-clad tubesheets to prevent galvanic corrosion. Ylasting Titanium supplies ASTM B338 tube in Gr2, Gr7, and Gr12 from factory stock.
