How to Verify Titanium Quality: 7 Tests Every Buyer Should Know

Seven essential tests verify titanium quality. Chemical Analysis by OES confirms alloy composition with actual measured values per heat. Red flag: certificates showing spec limits without actual numbers. Tensile Testing measures UTS, yield strength, elongation, and reduction of area. Red flag: elongation near minimum suggests brittle material. Hardness Testing provides quick screening, typically 30-36 HRC for Gr5, catching mixed lots but cannot verify grade alone. Ultrasonic Testing detects internal cracks and voids using high-frequency sound waves, mandatory for aerospace AMS specs. PMI Positive Material Identification uses handheld XRF to verify grade in seconds, distinguishing Gr5 from Gr2, but cannot measure oxygen or detect internal defects. Eddy Current Testing detects surface and near-surface defects in tube and wire, mandatory under ASTM B338. Metallography examines grain structure, alpha-case, inclusions, and segregation at microscopic level, revealing processing quality other tests miss. Mill Test Certificate Checklist: verify certificate type 3.1 or 3.2, actual values not just limits, matching heat numbers, complete chemistry and mechanicals, signature and stamp. Ylasting Titanium provides EN 10204 3.1 certificates with actual test values, OES chemistry, tensile testing, and full traceability. UT, PMI, metallography, and 3.2 third-party testing available on request.
